WHAT IS THE ROLE OF COMMUNITY MEMBERS WITH TRIBAL TRUSTS?

When a community member has a Tribal Trust, their role is to use the funds as directed by the trustee.  They will be responsible for proving proper use, and providing other information about the benefit they were to receive.  They may also be responsible for showing a need for the trust money.  This may be through providing a household budget or proof of income or expenses.  They may also be required to pursue other means for the benefit or payment sought, and present proof of having been denied those means, before receiving money from the trust.

Parents and guardians are frequently involved with Tribal Trusts for members.  Tribal trusts for minors will normally work through the parents to provide the money to the minors.  Though the payments may be directly to the doctor or school for the minor, they may also be to the parent or guardian of the minor, with the requirement that the parent or guardian provide proof of proper use.

Tribal government offices may also be involved with the trusts.  Frequently they may offer similar or complimentary services to the purposes of the trust, and the trust will work with the tribal government office to provide the maximum, coordinated benefit to the community member.
